Presentation Meeting (7th May)
In this first meeting, the course will be introduced to the aspiring partecipants, so that you can have a feeling of the way the lessons will unfold, the way you learn and the mood of the courses, that are informative but also fun (what else, it’s music!).
Lesson 1 (14th May)
Simpler, Drum Rack & Layers
In this lesson we’re going to discover Sampling through Ableton’s instrument Simpler. Then we are going to learn how to use Drum Racks efficiently, and we are gonna dig into the technique of layering, both theorically and practically.
Lesson 2 (21st May)
Automation, Sound Design, Send Effects
In this lesson we are going to study details: you will learn how to use automations, how to create your send channels, and we will appraoch sound design.
Lesson 3 (28th May)
Rhythm, Groove, Silence
This lesson will explore the concept of rhythm and groove, which way more than what percussion are doing. We will try to define what rhythm is, and will then study how does it work in the short time (loop) and in the long time (arrangement). As a vital part to rhythm and music in general, is silence (a broader idea of silence, not only intended as absence of sound) and we will learn how to spot it in other people’s track, and how to use it.
Lesson 4 (4th June)
Mixing, Space, Groups and Layer
Essential to computer music is the spacial dimension, in depth, and in stereo. This will be the question that will drive us through learning the basic concepts of mixing and the use of compressors, equalizers, panners, reverbs and so on. Those instruments are so overlooked in laptop producers that are one of the first signs of quality, and therefore build instant trust.
Lesson 5 (11th June)
Harmony in Electronic Music, Processes, Arrangement
In this lesson I’ll show you why is important to have your own process, and what does it mean to achieve your own sound. This will be the introduction to the idea of coherence in electronic music, and our study on the symbolic value of sound, another important tip to stimulate the imagination of people without using words or melody. Personal techniques to finish a song without getting stucked, and other tips will be shared.
Lesson 6 (18th June)
Effect Rack
Effect Racks are not only useful: they are beautiful. In electronic music, sometimes the music relies more on the use of effects than on the use of notes. Effects are the instruments of our generation, and we are gonna learn how they work, how to put them in order in the chain, how to make them talk with each other and how to represent your sound and the feeling that you have in your mind.
